Choosing your major

Some students show up on campus already knowing exactly what they want to major in鈥攂ut if you鈥檙e not one of them, don鈥檛 worry! Most students are still figuring it out when it鈥檚 time to choose, and we鈥檙e here to help you make a plan.

Need help picking a major?

Try these tips:

  • Explore your options. Check out the list of undergrad programs to see what鈥檚 out there and what each major is all about.
  • Do some research. Visit the Student Success Centre or browse online to learn more about different majors and career paths.
  • Know what鈥檚 required. to see what courses are involved in each major鈥攁nd ask yourself if they sound interesting.
  • Talk to people. Chat with students and profs in programs you鈥檙e curious about, or book a meeting with an advisor.
  • Visit departments. Drop by the ones you鈥檙e interested in and check out bulletin boards for info on seminars, events, internships, and scholarships.
  • Try different classes. Taking courses in other departments is a great way to discover what you like.
  • Thinking about more than one area? You might want to do a double major or add a minor.

Before you declare your major

Think about your interests, skills, and long-term goals. Your future career might require more studies, so keep that in mind when choosing your major.

Keep your options open. If your interests or plans change, you can change your major. Or, you might want to add a minor or certificate to explore other areas of interest.
